Emily van Egmond, a 30‑year‑old midfielder who has earned more than 100 caps for the Matildas, will leave Brisbane Roar at the end of the A‑League Women season to join Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand. The move marks the latest chapter in a career that has spanned two continents and featured multiple domestic titles.
In a joint announcement on Thursday, Roar confirmed that the club will bestow an unprecedented honour on van Egmond, recognising her contributions both on and off the field. The ceremony is scheduled for the final home match of the season, where the team will present her with a specially designed plaque and retire her jersey number.
Van Egmond's decision to relocate to New Zealand comes after a prolific spell with Roar, during which she helped the club secure back‑to‑back W-League championships and served as a mentor to younger players.
Career highlights with Brisbane Roar
Van Egmond joined Brisbane Roar in 2015 and quickly became a central figure in the squad's midfield. Over eight seasons she made 98 league appearances, netting 22 goals and providing 18 assists.
Her tenure coincided with Roar's 2018–19 and 2019–20 championship runs, where she was named to the A‑League Women Team of the Season on both occasions. Internationally, she represented Australia at the 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women's World Cups, scoring a crucial goal against Norway in 2023.
Unprecedented honour from the club
Brisbane Roar announced that van Egmond's jersey – number 14 – will be retired, a first for a female player in the club's history. The honour reflects her status as a role model and her impact on the club's culture.
"Emily's commitment to excellence has set a benchmark for every player who walks through our doors," said Roar CEO Peter McLennan. "Retiring her number is a testament to her legacy and the lasting influence she will have on the next generation of talent."
Next chapter in New Zealand
Van Egmond will sign a two‑year contract with Wellington Phoenix Women, who are expanding their squad ahead of the 2024–25 A‑League Women season. She expressed excitement about the new challenge and the opportunity to help grow the game across the Tasman.
"I'm humbled by this recognition and grateful for the support from the Roar family," van Egmond said. "I look forward to bringing my experience to Wellington and contributing to the growth of women's football in New Zealand."
