Geoff Allen, a highly respected and successful trainer in the greyhound racing world, has passed away at the age of 77. Allen was a significant force in both Victoria and Queensland, known for his breeding prowess and his ability to produce top-tier racing dogs.
His journey in the sport began in his home state of Victoria with a greyhound named Treb Lass. Despite an unpromising start, Allen developed her and subsequently bred her to Buka Sunset. This mating produced Hanson Blaze, a remarkable stayer who achieved considerable success, including winning the prestigious Sir John Dillon at Sandown.
The Hanson Dynasty
The influence of Hanson Blaze extended through her progeny, with notable greyhounds like Hanson Ned and the Laurels winner Hanson Kelly emerging from her litters. Furthermore, her offspring with Head Honcho produced Hanson Skye, who would go on to become the dam of the outstanding Albion Park bitch, Solid Skye, herself a star broodmare.
Allen’s dedication to breeding and training led him to relocate to Queensland, where the "Hanson" line of greyhounds quickly became synonymous with success. He became a leading figure in the state's greyhound racing scene, with his dogs frequently dominating major events.
Feature Race Victories
Throughout his illustrious career, Geoff Allen celebrated numerous significant victories. In 1995, he captured the Shepparton Cup with Hanson Diamond. Hanson Senor added to the stable's tally by winning the Townsville Cup, the Young Guns, and the Flying Amy Classic.
Hanson Diamond, in particular, was a model of consistency and talent. The greyhound had an impressive race record, competing in 84 starts, securing 30 wins, 22 second-place finishes, and 15 thirds, accumulating over $118,000 in prize money. Her notable performances also included placings in the Melbourne Cup, Peter Mosman, New Stars Classic, and the Victorian final of the National Sprint, alongside appearances in the finals of the Coca Cola Cup, Bob Payne Spring Sprint, Silver Bullet, and Ballarat Cup. The "Hanson" dynasty produced a multitude of exceptional racing talents.
Later Years and Legacy
Following a marriage breakup, Geoff Allen sold his Queensland greyhound property and spent several years traveling around the country. In his later years, he was admitted to hospital where he was treated for dementia.
Geoff Allen's passing marks the end of an era for many in greyhound racing. His contributions as a breeder and trainer have left an indelible mark on the sport, with the "Hanson" name continuing to resonate with quality and success.
