The Brisbane Broncos are experiencing a significant downturn in their NRL season, with speculation mounting over coach Michael Maguire's future. Following six consecutive defeats, the club's prospects of reaching the finals appear slim, a stark contrast to their championship victory just last season.
The pressure on Maguire has intensified to a point where one prominent journalist has suggested that a rival club should consider reaching out to the Broncos to gauge the coach's current standing.
Maguire's Job Security Assessed
Journalist Brent Read believes that Michael Maguire will likely retain his position to commence the following season, irrespective of the Broncos' final ladder standing this year. However, Read emphasizes that the pressure will become immense if the team's performance continues to decline.
"He won a comp last year so he’s probably secure for the time being, but if he finishes the year in 16th, no coach is secure,” Read stated on NRL360. He further referenced the case of Kev Walters, who was sacked in 2024 the year after guiding his team to a grand final. "The Broncos are going to back him now and give him every chance. He’ll start next season in charge but if things don’t turn around, he’ll start next year under immense pressure as it’s the last year of his deal."
Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy has publicly expressed his support for Maguire, who is under contract with the club until the end of 2027. Despite this, the club's history indicates a low tolerance for failure.
Rival Club Hypothetical Made
The discussion around Maguire's future has led to a hypothetical scenario proposed by Dean Ritchie of The Daily Telegraph. Ritchie argued that Maguire, having ended a significant premiership drought in his inaugural season, should be afforded more leniency.
"He’s won a premiership so surely that’s given him some brownie points. But I’d imagine by Round 10 to 12 they will take stock of where they’re at,” Ritchie commented. He also voiced his criticism of the tendency to scrutinize coaches too early in the season: "This is the problem I have with rugby league these days and it’s a heavy beef I have and that we jump on coaches’ backs way too early. This bloke won a comp in September. I know it’s been a poor year but I don’t think we should be talking about a premiership winning coach (being axed) a year later."
In a surprising suggestion, Read floated the idea of the struggling St. George Illawarra Dragons making an inquiry about Maguire's situation. "This isn’t likely to happen, but if I’m the Dragons, I pick up the phone and make a phone call (to Madge) just to find out where the situation lies,” Read proposed.
Broncos' Challenging Schedule Ahead
As it stands, only a limited number of clubs do not have their head coaches contracted beyond the current season. The North Queensland Cowboys are reportedly close to re-signing Todd Payten, leaving the Dragons as the other team with an interim coach in Dean Young.
The Broncos are currently on a bye week, which will be followed by a challenging fixture against the Sydney Roosters.
